Memo to Tim Scott: WELCOME TO MY ATTENTION.

There was quite a bit of jokery made of the idea that South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley might appoint Stephen Colbert to the Senate seat vacated by the reprehensible Jim DeMint, who quit Congress as soon as he realized the Heritage Foundation would pay him a lot more money to keep saying the same stupid shit, and he'd still get to hang with all his buds.

Well, Haley's given us the next best thing, by which I mean a much, much worse thing. She gave us Tim Scott, promoting him from the House of Representatives where he didn't do a whole lot. But as the scrutiny of him post-appointment revealed, he's basically a caricature of Colbert's right-wing caricature, and by being a caricature of a caricature, Scott comes full circle and appears to actually believe this shit.

For example, Tim Scott thinks that if you're on food stamps, and in a union, and you go on strike, your whole family should be kicked off food stamps. Which is an impressive feat, somehow combining Republican hatred of unions and their systematic desire to abuse the poor into one single policy, a feat that will go unsurmounted until they come up with the idea to mandate abstinence-only voter education in the inner city.

When Scott served on the Charleston City Council, he was a huge fan of displaying a contentious symbol more common in the South on state property. Luckily, since Scott is black, it wasn't the Confederate flag. But it WAS the Ten Commandments.

Scott said at the time that ""I've always said and remain in this position: Whatever it costs in the pursuit of this goal is worth it," referring to the tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees caused by the inevitable lawsuit which they inevitably lost because the Ten Commandments are, once you get far enough up the court chain, ALWAYS ruled to be on the wrong side of the church-state divide, which is also apparently where Scott likes to hang out.

He's associated with the Tea Party. is fairly stridently anti-gay, was endorsed by Sarah Palin in his congressional run, somehow managed to run to the right of Strom Thurmond's fucking son in his primary, thinks the government should never, ever pass any laws restricting guns, and said we should impeach Obama if the President were to ever grow a pair and settle the debt ceiling thing by invoking the 14th Amendment. Classic stuff.

So I'm expecting great things from him in his Senate career, and hope he doesn't disappoint me. If nothing else, he should put some pressure on James Inhofe in the competition to be America's Worst Senator, and that should provide plenty of material.
