The Latest Paper Cut

« August 2016 »

Memo to Donald Trump: AND THAT... IS WHY YOU FAIL.

I've said before that my big How Trump Will Lose theory is the death of a thousand self-inflicted paper cuts. People who ask "is this the thing that will end him" are approaching this the wrong way. The S.S. Trump will not sink because it hits an iceberg ans sinks. No, the S.S. Trump will sink as it slowly leaks support through a thousand tiny holes.

This is because, as we've mentioned, Trump can't stop himself. This isn't an act. The positions he takes may be ones of convenience, but the attitude and approach is consistent. If someone hurts him, he wants to hurt them back, and hurt them more. And each time he lashes out, a small portion of his constituency is unable to rationalize or justify it. Most can, but some can't. And so it is with Trump's decision to go after Khizr and Ghazala Khan.

I don't have to explain who the Khans are to you. You know. Khizr Khan's speech at the Democratic National Convention didn't just impact on the surface. It was a hit, a palpable hit, and everyone knew it. That's why literally the only defense anyone can seem to muster is the hoary old "exploiting their son's death to score a political point", because people are stupid and don't understand the difference between "exploiting" and "using".

So, in an attempt to strike back, Trump relied on Dumbfuck Wingnut Logic. Dumbfuck Wingnut Logic is what happens when Dumbfuck Wingnuits interpret events through their worldview without remembering that their worldview is in conflict with actual reality. They leap to a conclusion that makes perfect sense to them, and is, therefore, totally wrong.

Dumbfuck Wingnut Logic is what leads people to see Tim Kaine wearing a pin of a white star on a blue background, and, since Kaine speaks The Evil Espanyole, decide that the pin must be the flag of Honduras, not a Blue Star pin because his son is a currently serving Marine. The North Carolina GOP should have known what the pin meant in the first place, and should have known enough about Ockham's Razor to check before tweeting out the accusation, but Dumbfuck Wingnut Logic won the day, and therefore lost the day.

Very similarly, Trump. Trump saw The Bad Muslim Man Who Hurted Him on the teevee. He saw the man's wife not saying anything. He ran it through his worldview filter for Muslims, and reached the following conclusion. ACTUAL DWL CONCLUSION QUOTE TIME!

"I saw him. He was very emotional and probably looked like a nice guy to me. His wife … if you look at his wife, she was standing there. She had nothing to say. She probably, maybe she wasn't allowed to have anything to say. You tell me, But a plenty of people have written that. She was extremely quiet, and it looked like she had nothing to say. A lot of people have said that."

Now, I was not paying a ton of attention to the news this weekend, so I can't actually tell you how many minutes it took for the Khans to provide the much more reasonable explanation that they discussed whether she would speak as well, that she could have spoken, but that she was, for some reason, unsure if she could keep her composure speaking to an arena full of people about the death of her son. Oh, and she has high blood pressure.

It will be sweet, poetic justice if one of the holes in the S.S. Trump comes from a self-inflicted wound due to his inability to understand that Muslims are not a monolithic, homogeneous blob of belief and practice. That they don't all hate America, they don't all support terrorism, and they don't all treat women as second-class citizens. Because that belief led Trump to attack the mother of a heroic dead American soldier who had done nothing to him except be around when her husband insulted him.

Lots of people will be able to rationalize that. But not everyone. And this wasn't the first of these, and it won't be the last. He'll keep wounding himself, and all Clinton needs to do is know exactly how much salt to rub in the wound. There's a tipping point where going after Trump on these things to aggressively will cause an instinctive wagon-circling. The "if filthy liberals are mad about it it must be great" effect. Don't try to sink the ship. Just keep them from patching the holes and the ship will take care of itself.
