Memo to Donald Trump and the rest of the GOP: YES, YOU ARE.

The annual Martin Luther King Day tradition at You Are Dumb Dot Net is to assess the state of racism in America by doing a Google News search on “racism” and/or “racist” and see what turns up.

But for the first time in You Are Dumb’s 14-year history, the only way I could make that work is to exclude the name of the President of the United States from that search.

I mean, don’t get me wrong. We’ve had racist presidents before. Nixon and LBJ were super-racist. Most of the presidents before them were racist because they were white people at the top of a racist society. Andrew Jackson was super racist and somewhat genocidal, and of course is the idol of our current White-Devil-In-Chief.

But Trump is openly racist, to the point where people whose entire life depends on not pointing out the obvious about people in power are staring to point out the obvious about it. To the point where he had to tell a reporter he wasn’t a racist, then, in typical Trump fashion, went on to say he’s the “least racist person you’ve ever interviewed”, which wouldn’t even be likely if he’d somehow found an interview who’d only interviewed white people his entire career.

What we still haven’t addressed, in any way, is what to do about a racist president? I mean, I know what we should do. All the Democrats and Republicans who want to distance themselves from Trump’s racism should just pass a clean DACA bill with a veto-proof majority. You’d think there would be enough members of Congress who don’t want to be thought of as racist to manage that. But that’s not the world we live in. Instead, we have senators lying about the President’s comments to defend him, we have senators blaming the inability to pass an immigration bill on people calling a racist a racist, and we have a debate focusing on whether or not Haiti is a shithole rather than universal condemnation of the idea that people from certain countries are inherently bad.

So instead of celebrating MLK Day in the traditional manner, I suggest we celebrate it by slapping anyone using the construction “if MLK were alive today, he’d...” and remind them that MLK isn’t alive, they are, and it’s their fucking job to do something.
