Memo to

Despite my attempt at being thorough while being thoroughly pissed off on Wednesday, there's a fair amount of unfinished business and follout from the Shirley Sherrod incident. So let's put this sorry saga to bed once and for all. SPASTIC TOPIC FARMVILLE FRIDAY!

As I predicted, Vilsack did the only thing he could do - culpad to the maxima, and offered Sherrod a new job. And good for him for doing so, even though he's still a stupid fuckhole. But Vilsack's press conference was the ONLY moment of true contrition we've seen from anyone since Tuesday. Everyone else lined up for the PARADE OF EXCUSES. Let's start at the top.

"He jumped the gun. Partly because we now live in this media culture where something goes up on YouTube or a blog and everybody scrambles. I've told my team and I told my agencies that we have to make sure that we're focusing on doing the right thing instead of what looks to be politically necessary at that very moment. We have to take our time and, and think these issues through." - Barack Obama.

This is what we in the industry call pure, unmitigated bullshit. It didn't appear on YouTube. It didn't appear on "a" blog. It appeared on one of Andy Breitbart's vat-grown blog clones. That was all you needed. And then you went and did what was politically necessary so that it would look like you were doing the right thing instead of what is politically necessary.

The problem wasn't that you made a snap decision. It's that you made the wrong snap decision. To accept a Breitbart video as true, or true enough to be politically damaging. Let's hope you know this, and are just saying what you're saying because it's politically necessary.

"The whole point was to show that the -- for the NAACP to spend five days on national TV saying that the Tea Party is racist without any evidence when we can prove that the central argument didn't happen and the mainstream media won't play it -- for them to talk about racism they should not be throwing stones in glass houses."

"You’re going off of her word that the farmer’s wife is the farmer’s wife?"

"I am public enemy No. 1 or 2 to the Democratic Party, the progressive movement and the Obama administration based upon the successes my journalism has had." - A trio of poops from Breitbart.

Some see this as evidence that Breitbart is nuts, but I know what he's doing. In any situation like this, the people who are wrong need reasons to re-validate their worldview. So Andy's giving them everything he can to cling to. It was a conspiracy. It was liberal revenge. It was about something completely different than what we were saying it was about three days ago. Every wingnut out there will cling to one, two, or all three of these things in the face of what would otherwise make them question what they believe.

"So I owe Ms. Sherrod an apology for not doing my homework, for not putting her remarks into the proper context. Since the exact same thing happened to me a few years ago on the despicable Media Matters and NBC News took my words out of context about Sylvia's restaurant in Harlem, I well understand the need for honest reporting... One of his own? Would that be another American, Ms. Sherrod? If a white public servant referenced his own kind or one of his own when speaking about an African-American, that white person would be fired on the spot. Now, Shirley Sherrod is a longtime liberal activist..." - Bill O'Reilly's "apology" for calling Sherrod a racist.

In other words, he's sorry he called her a racist. He knows what it's like to be called a racist just for saying he was surprised black people used forks. I mean, that was totally out of context. He was making a larger point about how ill-mannered black people are. And being called a racist for that really hurt.

And then, having apologized and found what Bill O'Reilly thinks is common ground, he goes on to call her a racist, and worse, a liberal activist. Sure it was wrong of the right to treat her that way, but look at how she was dressed! All liberal and activist and black and stuff. She really was asking for it.

Oh, and there's also a certain amount of "ha ha, we fooled the liberals into fucking up" going on, but I'm letting that slide because, well, they fooled Obama and Vilsack into fucking up. Yes, the blackguard who takes advantage of stupid people is behaving badly, but I'm willing to place plenty of blame on the grownups who are supposed to be running shit around here for not caveating enough emptor.
