Memo to Jeb Bush and Donald Trump: FOR FUCK'S SAKE.

The 2016 election is becoming truly magical. Where else could we spend a weekend watching Jeb Bush spar with Donald Trump over who was the president on September 11, 2001?

This, of course, is a fascinating artifact of a concerted Republican effort, for the past 14 years, to put the first seven months and 22 days of Dubya's presidency in the memory hole. America existed between Inauguration Day 2001 and September 12, 2001, but nobody was realy in charge until Dubya took the reins after the terrorist attacks and decided to do what needed to be done to keep us safe.

In this alternate reality, My Pet Goat never happened. "Bin Laden Determined To Attack U.S." never happened. All evidence of Bush's incompetence is erased, which basically means all evidence of Bush's presidency is erased prior to the attacks.

And for the most part, the Washington media was happy to adopt this version of reality. Partly because they've never met a Republican narrative they didn't like, partly because 9/11 and the subsequent wars made us all insane. But the upshot of it is that for years, Republicans were able to say that Dubya kept us safe, when he certainly didn't keep us safe up to 9/11 and he didn't really keep us all that safe afterward.

Now, keep in mind, I don't want the President to "keep me safe", not the way Bush allegedly did it, and no tthe way Obama's been doing it either. I don't subscribe to the safety-worship of modern America that leads everyone to ask "what could they have done" after every tragedy, which always leads to a bunch of new bullshit that doesn't address the actual problem. But yes, George W. Bush was president on 9/11.

All of the above, of course, is to explain why it was controversial for Donald Trump to remind everyone that Jeb is full of shit. This is one of the few times where Trump's outsider candor is helpful. He doesn't feel a need to follow the established narratives, so he said 9/11 happened on Bush's watch, which it did, and everyone got upset.

Before we praise Trump too much, he also said his immigration policies would have prevented the 9/11 hijackers out of the country in the first place. Which means that, by deciding not to run for President in 2000, Donald Trump caused 9/11.

But the fact remains, Jeb Bush's line about his dumbfuck brother is a deep vein of the purest bullshit that's survived and thrived for over a decade because of America's deep-seated psychosis over 9/11 and our broken political media, and even if it's a horrible thing that Trump is doing as well as he is, the fact that Jeb's doing as badly as HE is because of Trump may be a net plus.
