Non-Trump Monsterhood

Memo to Pete Sessions, Jeff Hoelscher, and Roger Jimenez: ALSO FUCKING MONSTERS.

There's no denying that when it comes to the Orlando shootings, Donald Trump was one of the biggest fucking monsters out there. But he wasn't alone. And since we devoted the whole space to him last week, this week's IDIOTS SAY THE DAMNDEST THINGS will turn its attention to the rest.

“It was a young person’s nightclub, I’m told. And there were some [LGBT ppl] there, but it was mostly Latinos” - Texas congresscritter Pete Sessions.

Sessions was by no means the only conservative who carefully crafted their sympathy for the victims so as not to sound like they were being sympathetic toward gay people. He's just the most egregious. But lots of Republicans and lots of conservative organizations claimed support for the Orlando victims without mentioning why they were tagged by a raging homophobe.

Sessions' spokesman later clarified that he didn't mean to diminish the nature of the crime, he just went way, way, way out of his way to point out that the club's customers that night were not 100% gay, because... because... because... Right. You can't think of a good reason either, so I think we'll just stick with the fact that Pete Sessions is afraid of being seen to show sympathy for murdered GAY people because he's a fucking monster.

"Lowering it too much takes away from the honor. I feel for these victims and for their families, but I don’t feel this was a time for the flag to be lowered.” - Cole County, MO commissioner Jeff Hoelscher, explaining his county's decision to defy President Obama's order to fly the flags at half staff for the Orlando shooting victims.

Let's look at that logic for a second. If we don't maintain standards about whose deaths, and what kind of deaths, we lower the flag for, then the people who deserve it won't be honored as much thanks to an overall lowering of the honor average by the undeserving. First, nobody ever thinks like that. Nobody sees a flag at half staff and thinks, "well, a few years ago, I might have thought something really bad happened, but now I'm not so sure." Nobody remembers the last ten things we lowered the flags at half staff for, and ten's not even enough to create a valid statistical honor average.

Of course, we all know what he really means. Some people are worthy of being honored when they die, and some people aren't, for some reason I can't seem to put my finger on right now. Something a rural county commissioner From Assend, Missouri might object to. And, come to think of it, there may be something about the President who ordered the flag lowered that made a rural county commissioner from Dogtaint, Missouri feel comfortable to the point of at least a partial chubby to defy that order. Can't imagine what that would be either.

“People say, like: ‘Well, aren’t you sad that 50 sodomites died?’ Here’s the problem with that. It’s like the equivalent of asking me — what if you asked me: ’Hey, are you sad that 50 pedophiles were killed today?’ Um, no, I think that’s great. I think that helps society. You know, I think Orlando, Fla., is a little safer tonight. The tragedy is that more of them didn’t die. The tragedy is — I’m kind of upset that he didn’t finish the job!” - Sacramento pastor Roger Jimenez, an honest man.

The specifics of this particular super hate aren't worth commenting on in detail, although you'll be happy to know that when their lease is up, the Verity Baptist Church is going to have to lie on a shit-ton of applications to find a new space to be a rag-tag assortment of complete fucking monsters. Freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom to have a roof to speak under, assholes.

But I do want to point out that we in America do have radical, let's say "clerics" or "imams" wishing for the mass murder of homosexuals, and a wide variety of followers who have pledged allegiance to them, and have a history of committing acts of violence in the name of their ideology. An ideology that America's lawmakers are singling out, not for watch lists and immigration bans, but for increased inclusion and control over all our lives. Wonder why that is?
