End The Week On A High Note

« September 2005 »

"I don't think anybody anticipated the breach of the levees. They did anticipate a serious storm. But these levees got breached. And as a result, much of New Orleans is flooded. And now we are having to deal with it and will."

- President George W. Bush, during an interview with Diane Sawyer, on ABC's Good Morning America, Thursday, September 1, 2005.

The first sentence by the President of the United States is a lie. Not just a lie, an inexcusable lie. A lie that flies in the face of facts. A lie that flies in the face of the government's own predictions. A lie that is semantically and tactically identical to Condaleeza Rice's lie a few years ago that "We could never have anticipated... a hijacked airplane as a missile."

It is a lie for which the contravening facts were in the public record as recently as Monday of this week. Unlike Rice's lie, where the facts were buried in government documents showing how various agencies had anticipated tactics like those used on 9/11. Every single time a storm came near New Orleans, the possibility of the levees breaking got mentioned. Anticipated? Fuck, it was PREDICTED.

If you believe this lie, you are dumb.

If you can sit there and rationalize this lie as anything other than blatant ass-covering, you are dumb.

If you can support someone who would state such a blatantly ass-covering falsehood, for no other reason than his being on your team, you are dumb.

If, when confronted with this lie, you go anywhere near any sentence that might possibly begin "Well, but...", YOU ARE DUMB.

Forget, for a moment, every single thing George W. Bush has done, or not done, for the past five years. Put it out of your mind. It's not easy, but do it. Forget, if you can, that the President of the United States is even George W. Bush. Forget that he is a Republican. Remove any and all extraneous details from the picture.

Thousands are dead. Millions are homeless. A city is under water and in chaos. The President of the United States goes on television and says "I don't think anybody anticipated the breach of the levees." You know many people did in fact anticipate the breach of the levees. If you somehow don't know many people did in fact anticipate the breach of the levees, there is ample, indisputable, concrete evidence you can be shown to that effect.

If, at this point, you can in any way, shape, or form support or defend this man - not a party, not any agenda, not any beliefs you may have in common with policy or platform - just this man who said this thing at this time, then you are not part of the problem. YOU ARE THE PROBLEM.

You are why there is no accountability. You are why the rulers of this country have free exercise of power without fear of consequence. You are why the greedy, the corrupt, the ethically bankrupt seek those offices, so that they can wield that power and reap the benefits and know that they will not, CAN NOT get into any serious trouble for it.

You are dumb. And there are millions of you. And sometimes I can point and laugh at you, and sometimes I can call you funny names, and sometimes, sometimes, I cannot even contemplate your existence without being sick.
