Memo to Betsy DeVos: YEAH, I THINK YOU'RE WINNING.

It's an exciting competition to watch if you don't actually live here. Which of Donald Trump's appointments to date is the worst?

There's Steve Bannon, of course, the sweaty shitweasel who's made it his life's work to be the head P.R. guy for misogynist neo-Nazis. There's Jeff Sessions who's named after Jefferson Davis, opposes voting rights for minorities, but put a Klansman in jail one time so I'm led to believe is totally not a racist. There's Mike Flynn, the new National Security Advisor, who's a full-blown War Against Islam clash of civilizations true believer.

I mean, his best appointment to date is Nikki Haley, who has zero foreign policy experience to bring to the U.N. Ambassadorship, but hasn't actually said she hates the U.N. and wants to disband it, which, compared to Betsy DeVos, the new secretary of education, is a breath of fresh air.

The woman Donald Trump wants in charge of public education in America is a billionaire who doesn't believe in public education in America. You'll hear words like "vouchers" and "choice" and "public-private partnerships" when she's discussed, but if the last four decades of small-government Republicanism have taught us anything, it's that all those things mean funneling tax dollars to private industry and let them ruin it.

This is not just rhetoric. She did this. In Michigan. And by her standards, it was a huge success, because her standards don't involve being a poor person trying to get an education in Michigan. You know how to look stuff up. I'm not interested in her record. I'm interested in her motivations.

Because, as I mentioned above, she's a billionaire. Now, there's nothing INHERENTLY wrong with being a billionaire, but a lot of her billions turns out to be Amway money. And Amway is an MLM, or "multi-level marketing" business, which, as we all know, is a legal pyramid scheme designed to exploit gullible poor people to funnel money to rich people. So that's some morally questionable shit right there.

But if you're a billionaire, why would you go into public service? I mean, other than the insane narcissism of someone making fun of you at a correspondents' dinner, of course. You go into public service because you're a true believer, and know all too well that ultimately, all your money can't make your true belief come to life, because politicians don't stay bought anymore. Which means you gotta get your filthy hands on the levers of power. Which Betsy DeVos has just done, on a national level.

Donald Trump, for the most part, neither knows, nor gives a shit, what government does when it's not doing things to him, so he'll only directly go after taxes and regulations. But DeVos know, and she cares. And like Ryan with Medicare and Sessions with black people voting and Flynn with non-Christians existing, she'll be in a position to do something about it. And you won't like it.
